Why Door Knocking Works

Pressure cleaning is visual. Customers often do not notice how dirty their property is until somebody points it out.

What You Will Learn

  • Why this trade is uniquely suited to door knocking
  • The economics: what forty doors is actually worth
  • Why it outperforms advertising in your first month
  • What it does for you beyond the jobs

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1
    Understand the core insight

Dirt arrives gradually. A driveway goes green over three years and the owner never has a day where they decide it is dirty. They are not in the market — until someone standing on it points at the edge and they suddenly see it.

  2. 2
    Compare it to advertising

An ad reaches people already searching. Door knocking creates demand in people who were not looking. In a suburb with few people searching for 'pressure cleaning', knocking is the only way to find the work.

  3. 3
    Know the real numbers

Forty doors typically yields ten to fifteen conversations, three to six quotes and one to three jobs. At a $350 average that is $350–$1,050 for a morning, with no ad spend.

  4. 4
    Understand why it is free

Your only costs are fuel, printed door hangers and your time. In week one, when you have no reviews, no website and no budget, it is the only channel that works immediately.

  5. 5
Use it to learn your market

Forty conversations tell you what people actually care about, what prices make them flinch, and which surfaces come up most. That is market research you cannot buy.

  6. 6
Use it to build photo proof

Your first jobs come from knocking, and your first jobs are what produce the before-and-after photos that make everything else — ads, social, the website — actually work.

  7. 7
Treat it as a fixed habit, not a desperate measure

Operators who knock a fixed number of doors every week, busy or not, never have a quiet month. Operators who knock only when the phone is quiet have a quiet month every quarter.

Notes & reference

Every new operator wants leads without discomfort. Ads cost money you do not have and take weeks to tune. SEO takes months. Reviews need customers you do not have yet.

Knocking works this afternoon, for the price of a printed door hanger.

The maths

Forty doors in a two-hour block: - ~14 answer the door - ~4 have a genuine interest - ~2 book a quote - ~1 becomes a job at $300–$600

That is roughly $150–$300 per hour of knocking, at zero cost, on day one — and it comes with photos, a review and a street full of neighbours who will see your work.

Why it beats everything else early

  • Proximity. You are standing in front of the surface you are selling. You can point at it.
  • Density. One street means no travel between jobs.
  • The neighbour effect. One clean driveway in a street of dirty ones sells the next three by itself.
  • Feedback. Twenty conversations teach you more about objections in one afternoon than a month of ads.

Why people avoid it

It is uncomfortable for the first hour and then it is not. The discomfort is entirely about the fear of a stranger's disapproval — and the worst outcome available is that somebody politely says no and shuts a door.

The reframe that helps

You are not selling. You are telling someone their driveway is dirty, that you are working in their street, and that you can fix it cheaply because you are already here. That is a favour delivered efficiently, not an imposition.

Knock the street where you are already working, on the day you are working. "I'm doing number 14 this morning" is the strongest opening line in this business and it is completely true.
